WATER WORLD 2011

WATER WORLD XII TFL

FIRST MESSAGE OF EIGHT

This is the first of eight messages that will be sent to the entire troop to wrap up all information and registration for Water World XII TFL. If you are going, considering going or still have questions, please stay tuned. We hope that you find the string of messages helpful.

Below is a comprehensive article about the entire trip. The next seven emails over the next couple of weeks will detail registration procedures, packing suggestions, patrol assignments, duty rosters and most importantly, requests for help and assistance with set-up, towing, teaching and leadership skills. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the trip and be prepared to respond appropriately as the emails come. YOUR HELP IN RESPONDING IMMEDIATELY WILL BE MOST APPRECIATED!

WATER WORLD XII – TIMS FORD LAKE

THURSDAY, JULY 28- SUNDAY, JULY 31

Troop 137’s annual WaterWorld excursion will take us to Tims Ford Lake, Winchester, TN where we will enjoy our annual family camp out. As always, the priority of this trip is to offer Scouts the opportunity to earn water related merit badges and this year the list will include: Water Sports, Rowing, Motor boating, Sailing, Canoeing and Fishing.

Sign ups will begin in May and will be limited to 125 people with priority given to those staying the longest. Cost is $55 per person for the 3 night / 3 day camping experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND SIGN UPS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE TROOP’S WEBSITE. THERE IS A LINK ON THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN……….NOT THE PORTAL. LOOK FOR THE WATER WORLD LINK

We will camp in a nicely cleared area, on a rather remote peninsula called Fanning Bend. We will have a private beach, docks and ample room to groove in canoes, kayaks and sailboats. This year’s added luxury will be on-site Porta-Johns.

If family members prefer not to camp, you must act now to book lodging in the nearby areas. Availability is very limited. See lodging options at the end of this letter.

All food and drinks will be provided. Attendees will be responsible for their own tents, sleeping bags, chair, eating utensils and willingness to pitch in and help with activities and daily duties. Of course, a great Troop 137 camping spirit will be expected.

Each day, we follow organized camp agendas that start with early morning breakfast and a flag raising ceremony. After daily safety meetings, we engage in merit badge work. Lunch is always hardy and afterwards, we continue with merit badge progress, free time activities and exciting patrol competitions. There is plenty of fun for everyone ~ including siblings.  Dinner provides great fellowship and calm, scout spirit follows with ceremonial campfires and fabulous desserts!

TWO THINGS TO THINK ABOUT RIGHT NOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN WATER WORLD XII – 20011:

  1. Mr. Beasley will hold a motor boat license class on Tuesday, July 12th beginning at 1:00 PM at the Franklin Christian Church, 4040 Murfreesboro Rd, Franklin, TN. He will go over all the information you need to take the test, and then administer the test. The class will last approximately 3-1/2 hours. Remember that anyone wishing to take the test must buy the $10 permit at Wal-Mart or Academy Sports (see below for all the information).

This will be the only opportunity to take this class prior to WaterWorld. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, contact Mr. Beasley by email (see below). This class is open to the public but scouts will have priority, so sign up early. Scout parents are welcome to sit in on the class.

    Mr. Beasley - Crisben@aol.com

WATERWORLD MOTORBOATING REQUIREMENTS

ATTENTION ALL SCOUTS AND PARENTS

Tennessee law requires our scouts take the Tennessee Boaters Motor Boating Exam prior to operating our fishing boats at WaterWorld. This will apply to all scouts, even if they already have the merit badge. Here is what each scout must do prior to WaterWorld:

1. Study boating safety via the Internet course or the Boat Tennessee home study course (call 800-837-6012), you must be 11 years old to take the test.

2. You must purchase for $10 a boat safety exam permit from Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, a sporting goods store, bait store, or a marina. This is your ticket to take the exam. The ticket has the candidate's information on it; you'll need your social security number, similar to the fishing license requirement. You can take the test as many times as it takes to pass it.

3. Present the exam ticket to the examination administrator at a testing site. Lists of locations and dates will be posted on TWRA website: www.tnwildlife.org or call 800-837-6012. Allow (at least) 40-50 mins. The Williamson County site is our Library, but you must make an appointment, call 595-1243.

4. When you pass the test, you will receive a temporary certificate until your wallet card is mailed to you.

Remember the Scout Motto is "Be Prepared!" This will be a condensed class, so it is important to prepare for it by doing the following:

1. Study the Safe Boating lesson at: http://www.state.tn.us/twra/pdfs/boatguide.pdf

2. You must purchase for $10 a boat safety exam permit from Wal-Mart, a sporting goods store, bait store, marinas, etc. This is your ticket to take the exam. The ticket has the candidate's information on it; you'll need your social security number, similar to the fishing license requirement.

3. Bring this exam permit to the class.

2.         Adult leaders will be needed to assist with the following. If you sign up, be prepared to assist in some capacity. Contact Griff Irby to “take the lead”.

A.     Life Guarding / Coordination

B.     Every adult is encouraged to take the safety afloat and the safe swim on line courses offered through Middle TN BSA at: http://olc.scouting.org/

C.     Prayer Service on Sunday

D.     Pharmacist (if needed)

E.      Merit Badge instructor

a.       Canoeing

b.      Motor Boating

c.       Sailing

d.      Fishing

e.       Water Sports

f.        Rowing

g.       First Aid / CPR

F.      Program Director / Coach SPL with activities. (This one is the most fun! – Contact Richard Tambellini if you want this one.)

WATER WORLD XII TFL

THIRD MESSAGE OF EIGHT

WATER WORLD XII – TIMS FORD LAKE

THURSDAY, JULY 28- SUNDAY, JULY 31

FOR IN DEPTH INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER, VISIT THE TROOP’S WEBSITE AND CLICK ON THE LINK IN THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN. (NOT IN THE PORTAL)

First, some clarifications on some previous emails:

1.      If you have taken the motor-boating safety course and passed in the past, you do not have to take the course again. Your certificate is good for life ~ bring it with you so that you may operate a motor boat while at water world.

2.      The motor boating safety course, safety afloat and the canoeing merit badge are all different things:

a.      The safety course is to operate a motor boat if you are at least 11 years old and under 18.

b.      Safety afloat is for adult leaders and is simply a good thing to take the course on line to be an asset to the Troop.

c.       The merit badges are all unique, but to earn the motorboating merit badge, the scout will have to have a TN motor boating certificate to drive a boat.

Secondly, to pay and ask questions, we’ll be at the barn this Tuesday. See Griff Irby, Mike Coombs or Richard Tambellini.

CAN ANYONE HELP THE TROOP WITH THESE RESOURCES?

CANOPIES:

No! Not the little sandwiches you eat at a fancy tea party. (Sorry, same pun as last year). We need protection from the sun. If you are coming with one, or if you have one you can lend the troop please respond to email address below.

COOLERS:

Large double walled serious keep your food cold in the hot summer sun coolers. If you can help us get our hands on some, please respond to email address below.

OTHER STUFF:

·        LIFE JACKETS

·        DUTCH OVENS

·        GAS CANS

·        4 and 6 FOOT LONG FOLDING TABLES. WE COULD USE ABOUT 5 MORE

WHETHER YOU ARE GOING TO WATERWORLD OR NOT, WE COULD USE THESE THINGS. IF YOU CAN HELP IN ANY WAY, WE SURE WOULD APPRECIATE IT! Again, please respond to email address below.
